Brainy Parenting

If you have yet to discover Bethan Woollvin’s brilliantly twisted feminist fairy tales, you are in for an absolute treat! There’s been ‘Little Red,’ ‘Rapunzel,’ ‘Hansel Gretel,’ ‘I Can Catch a Monster,’ and now there are ‘Three Little Vikings’ to watch out for…

“Three brave little Viking girls save the day in this bold and funny adventure story for little rebels, by the creator of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Little Red and I Can Catch a Monster, Bethan Woollvin.

Once upon a time in a Viking village, everything seems to be going wrong. Chickens are disappearing, trees are falling down, and there’s lots and lots of crashing and bashing. The silly Chieftain won’t listen to the three littlest Vikings, but can they work together to figure out what’s going on and save the day?”

Another fantastically empowering read from Bethan Woollvin. I loved the themes of trusting your instincts, not relying on others to solve your problems, and turning to books for advice! The three little Viking friends were not just going to sit around and do nothing because their chieftain told them everything was fine. They knew something strange was going on so they seized the initiative to investigate themselves. And thank goodness they did! A great message for any young readers.

As ever, Bethan’s illustrations pop off the page with her stunning use of colour and clever clues lurking in the shadows. All of her books go straight onto my ‘keep’ shelf and are constantly recommended to anyone looking for a fresh take on traditional stories. Must-haves in anyone’s picture book collection.
